DEUS CAFE, Camperdown

Deus Café sits alongside its sexier sister store, Deus Ex Machina, like an oasis on an otherwise stark strip of Parramatta Rd. This double frontage Temple Of Enthusiasm is bound by Lyons Rd and Barr St, (our carpark for evening diners is located in Barr St ) is a beacon for those looking for an interesting way to spend some time and even less money. Food, art, music, surfboards, motorbikes, inappropriate movies, swapmeets and hip clothing, are all under one roof and brought to you by the godfather of fun Dare Jennings. Dare’s philosophy has always been to eek out a living by trading the things that we love to do ourselves. Dare’s vision for a building that caters for the no-nonsense needs of adult risk takers was the foundation on which Deus was built upon. Whether it’s surfing, skating or motorcycling, it’s a way of life Deus present. And everybody knows these things are enjoyed more on a full stomach. At Deus Café we like to keep it real by making the things that keep us interested. Classics. Though, we don’t place so much emphasis on the ‘risk taking’ side of things. A good burger is a good burger. Our cassoulet is as tasty as it is simple. It was given 1st place in Good Livings ‘ 3 Of A Kind ‘. People travel miles for our famous 180 day aged sirloin, but they usually live miles from Deus. We also make a great coffee. No fanfare, no wanky attitude. Just great Italian espresso coffee straight up. Have milk if you must. We use Di Lorenzo coffee- they understand where we’re coming from. Another feature of Deus Café is the bastard love child of Betty Sydney and Michel’s Patisserie, chef Pierre Labancz. Most people will remember Pierre from his 90’s Potts Point café, La Buvette, a watershed in Sydney’s patisserie culture for the fact he finally introduced a patisserie culture to Sydney. Pierre has a talent for effortlessly plating up food that Master Chef contestants cry over just before their eviction. Chefs everywhere scour cook books from around the world for inspiration. Pierre scours the fridge. Legend has it that our very own ‘Master Patissier’ invented the croissant but lost the recipe he had scrawled on a scrap of paper and it was not discovered until 200 years earlier by an oh so lucky compatriot of his. Never mind, Pierre’s ciabatta bread is even better. The triumvirate was almost complete, except there were only 2 of them and history clearly shows that all triumvirates worthy of mention have 3 members. Dare and Pierre, otherwise known as Darriere, put their feelers out to find an experienced hospitalitinista with an entrepreneurial flair and the ability to manage a large team of driven food and beverage professionals who ride motorbikes whilst surfing in cool t-shirts during swapmeets. They found no one. In keeping with the ‘risk taking’ philosophy they joined forces with Darlinghurst royalty Greg Lo Presti, coffee maker to the stars.Deus is a completely different kind of motorcycle company. While focussing on the design and construction of custom motorcycles, Deus promotes and celebrates a custom motorcycle culture that first appeared in Europe and America in the 1940s which has recently been revived by groups of young enthusiasts in Japan, America and Australia. The company is based in a 1600sq meter renovated factory building in Camperdown Sydney, the Deus Temple of Enthusiasm. Home to the showroom, workshop facilities and design studio. Connected to the showroom is the Deus Cafe, where locals of the inner west rub elbows at communal tables with riders gassing up on caffeine before their Saturday excursions.
